Newark approves demolition of building where gangster was slain

The building in Newark that once housed a restaurant where mobster Dutch Schultz was gunned down was approved for demolition tonight.
In a vote without dissent, the Newark Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission voted to allow new owner Miles Berger to knock down the building at 12 E. Park St. to make way for additional parking.

New Owner Plans Additional Enhancements for Landmark Office Tower
NEWARK, N.J., Jan. 15, 2008 - Newark's Military Park Building at 60 Park Place has been acquired by The Berger Organization, a long-time commercial real estate developer and manager in the city. The historic property was purchased from Kushner Companies by Berger, which had been a minority partner in the 250,000-square-foot office tower.

Holland Hotel LLC, a New Jersey partnership consisting of Kushner Companies of Florham Park; The Berger Organization of Newark; and Joseph Lifschutz, has acquired a 150-room hotel located at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City, New Jersey. The new owners acquired the former Quality Inn from Hudson Hotels for a purchase price of $6.5 million. The property, which originally opened in 1965 as a Holiday Inn, has been closed for nearly three years as a result of a fire.

It was 1916 -- the 250th anniversary of Newark's founding by Robert Treat, who in 1666 had led a band of Puritans out of New England to settle on the green banks of the winding Passaic River. Now this brawny, thriving capital of industry and finance had just passed a quarter-million population. It was feeling good about itself, and it decided to give itself a party.
